Hello Year 4/5s,

How are you? I can’t quite believe that we haven’t been at school for nearly a month. It seems so strange not to be all together in our classroom.

Last week my family celebrated Molly’s birthday. She was really not looking forward to a birthday during this time as she wanted be with her friends. However, much to her surprise she enjoyed her day, her friends and family all sang ‘happy birthday’ in a group video chat.

It made me think if you are keeping in touch with your friends? Are you phoning other family members or are you writing them letters or sending cards?

The cake I made however didn’t go to plan, as predicted it was disaster, I burnt it but I blame the oven! It was that bad, my two dogs Florence and Isabel, who usually eat anything and everything, turned their noses up at it. Have you been baking? Maybe you could share some baking tips and help me! I would love to see your star bakes.

I am sure you all heard about the amazing story of Captain Tom who is raising funds for the NHS. He has already raised more than £23 million and lots of people are campaigning that he should get a knighthood from the Queen. His birthday is on April 30th and he is going to be 100 years old. Unbelievable! Wouldn’t it be nice if you sent him a birthday card or post one on social media with the hastag #makeacardfortom .

Maybe you could create your own as I know how kind you all are.

On the subject of masterpieces, it was so lovely hearing from Ethan's family and how they created a salt dough volcano. Amazing! I can’t wait to see the pictures. I also received an email from the Suthern family who have made a paper-mache model of a volcano and are going to erupt it using cola and mentos. How exciting! If you remember that was one of the tasks I set you because we were due to learn about Mount Vesuvius. Can you remember which country Mt Vesuvius is in? We were in the middle of reading a book in class called Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. During this time you could finish it, follow this link to help you.

There are some great videos which show what happened to Pompeii. Maybe you could do some writing about the eruption. If you click on the link there are great examples of writing and these could help you write your own. You could include noun phrases (descriptive vocabulary) and if you are in Year 5 you could put in a relative clause.

Of course you might want to learn about other volcanoes around the world. You might even want to write a mini explanation on how volcanoes erupt and draw a picture showing the inside of one. I know you can do it!

I have been really impressed how you are working through your Active Learn. Remember not only have I included games but I also have put on worksheet activities that will keep you extra busy. You all know how much I like maths challenges. I have set two challenges you might like to try. The first challenge is all called Four Triangles,  https://nrich.maths.org/141  This challenge is a little trickier, watch the video and listen carefully, its called Bryony’s triangle https://nrich.maths.org/7392/note

Thank you to all the children who sent me a times tables battle on Timestable Rockstars. You might have noticed that I have sent you one back!

Take care everyone and hope to see you very soon

Mrs Atherton, Mrs Jackson and Mrs Barlow

P.S

I would love to see the work that you are creating so if you feel particularly proud of any of the work set, please feel free to share and email or tweet your work to the school.
